ROOT GALAXY NEXUS ON ANDROID 4.0.2 ICS WITH CF-ROOT [HOW-TO TUTORIAL]

Eminent Android developer and hacker Chainfire recently released his CF-Root tool for the Galaxy Nexusthat roots the device on Android 4.0.2 Ice Cream Sandwich, and we’ve got the step-by-step guide ready after the jump!

News of the root tool comes straight from XDA Developers – a popular forum for Android enthusiasts, developers and hackers – in the form of an official thread from developer Chainfire in which he discusses his tool and how enthusiasts like you can use to root their device.

This rooted kernel is for the "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root takes the kernel from an original firmware, and just adds root and busybox.

DISCLAIMER: Redmond Pie will not be held responsible if you lose data or your device gets damaged in the following of this guide. Proceed at your own risk.

Chainfire’s CF-Root tool does not come with a custom recovery like ClockworkMod Recovery, so you will have to flash it yourself. It’s a pretty simple procedure, and you can check it out in our post on how to flash ClockworkMod Recovery.

Step 1: Download the required kernel for your Galaxy Nexus:

• CF-Root (GSM) [Build: ICL53F]
• CF-Root (LTE) [Build: ICL53F]

You can check which version you should download by going to Settings > About phone and observing thebuild number.
Extract the .zip file.
Step 2: Ensure that your device is not connected to your computer.
Step 3: Download ODIN v1.85 [XDA Thread]. Launch it.
Step 4: Click on PDA and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar which you will find in the folder you extracted in Step 1.
Step 5: Switch off your Galaxy Nexus. Once it is completely shut down, press and hold Volume Down + Power buttons to boot into download mode.
Step 6: Once in download mode, connect your Galaxy Nexus with your computer.
Step 7: Ensure that you have not checked the Re-Partition option.
Step 8: Click on START and wait for your device to reboot.
If you followed the steps correctly, your Galaxy Nexus will now be rooted on Android 4.0.2 Ice CreamSandwich with Chainfire’s CF-Root tool.

Link2SD Android App – Use SD card for apps instead of Internal Memory

 

Link2SD is an application which allows users with rooted Android 1.6+ phones to move applications to the SD card.

Link2SD is an application which allows users with rooted Android 1.6+ phones to move applications to the SD card.


It functions in a way similar to apps2sd scripts, linking applications to SD card's second partition but differs in two ways. First, instead of linking /data/app folder (that means moving all applications), you can select the applications that you want to move. Second, it is an application, which means has a user interface. You can manage your applications with a few clicks.


It also provides native apps2sd features on Android 2.2 and higher. It can move any non-protected user apps to SD card (force move), with batch moving capability. It uses Android's standard SD-card installation feature and does not require a second partition. It can break some apps if they are not meant to be moved to the SD card (Such as Widgets).
Requirements:


· Android 1.6 or later
· root permission
· a second partition on your SD card






What I used:
-Xperia X10 Mini Pro
-4GB Sandisk MicroSD Class 2
-USB Broadband Stick as card reader
-PC running on Windows Vista Home Basic
-MiniTool Partitioning Wizard Home Edition
STEP 1:
Back up all data on your MicroSD.
Connect your phone/card reader with the SD Card and simply copy and paste all your files to your PC or to another MicroSD.
STEP 2:
Partitioning your MicroSD.
Download and Install Minitool Partioning Wizard Home Edition.
Plug your phone/card reader with the SD card to the PC and launch Minitool.
Your Micro SD should appear.
Right-click on it and choose Delete current partition. (It should say ”unallocated space”)
Right-click again and now choose Create.
PARTITIONING DETAILS:
1st partition: SD Card Mass Storage
(for you music, photos,documents, etc.)
On the Create window, input the ff. in the fields,
(You may leave the name blank)
Choose primary then FAT32 format.
Use the slider to set how much space you want to allocate for the first drive. (Mine is 50:50 around 2gb for each partition)
2nd partition: Will contain apps to be moved by Link2SD.
Right click on the unallocated space you left and choose Create.
You may leave the name blank,
Choose primary again and now you may either use ext2, ext3 or FAT32. (I used FAT32)
And then Create.
Now insert/mount the MicroSD into your phone. Download(see link below) and launch Link2sd. You may now choose the apps you want to move to your external memory.
TIP: Leave essential apps in the internal memory such as your launcher,sms,camera and others so you would have trouble loading them on start-up.

3. Click on Add Gadget in Sidebar or Footer

4. Select HTML/Javascript gadget from the list of available gadgets

5. Copy and paste the social bookmarking button code into the content box that is available for free download below. Note you will only be able to add the small social bookmarking buttons to the sidebar unless you only want a few of them.

6. Add a title such as Bookmark and Share if you wish

7. Click on the Save button

Few of the steps and instructions are common in both rooting and unrooting and those are

• Don’t loose patience
• Follow the tutorial very seriously and calmly
• Do not disconnect your phone
• Make sure your phone is charged more than 60%

Things needed before starting the un-rooting process

• Download this unroot-update.zip file.
• Copy the file to the root of phone’s internal memory

Step1: Switch off your phone and restart it with the following key combination

Volume UP + Home Key + Power button

It will bring your phone in the CWR (Clockwork Recovery mode).
Step2: In CWR, touchscreen will not work, you need to work using volume keys, home button and power button.

So using the power button, move to the “Install zip from SD card” option and click on the home key and then choose the ‘choose zip form sd card’ and select update-unroot.zip file and click “yes”.
Step3: completing above, it will bring you back to the menu. Click on the “Go Back” and then choose “Reboot System Now”.
Whoa! Your phone is un-rooted! Congrats.
